The Department of Aeronautical Engineering was established in the year 2005 with a sanctioned intake of 60 students. The sanctioned intake was increased to 120 from the academic year 2008-09 onwards.
The Department has well equipped laboratories and good infrastructure to meet the university curriculum requirements and is managed by a dedicated team of teaching and non-teaching faculty of rich and varied experience. The department has its own library and also organizes workshop, Seminar, Conference and symposium every year. The Department is keen on providing impetus to the students for acquiring practical exposure from aviation companies. The Department strives for development and all round excellence among the students and also aims at promoting meaningful object oriented academic interaction between students and faculty in a healthy atmosphere. It also helps to stimulate the creativity, individuality, and group dynamism among students.
The Department has got Research and Development cell to facilitate R&D activities and Internal quality assessment cell for elevating the quality of students and faculty members in all aspects. The department arranges visits to Sulur Air force station, yelahanka air force station, Airforce Technical college, Jalahalli, Indian Space Research Organisation Satellite center and Cochin Naval base every academic year for the industrial exposure of the students and faculties. The Department produces University Rank Holders every year.
Funds have been granted by various government funding agencies like ISRO, AICTE (MODROBS and RBS scheme) for workshop and Research projects.
The Department is proud of its students serving in Indian Air force and Indian Navy. Students are also placed in Defense Research and Development organization, Hindustan Aeronautics limited, UTC Aerospace systems India, Safran Aerospace, Airbus Group India, BELL Helicopter India, Indigo Airlines, L & T Infotech, Infoview, Cognizant Technology Solutions, Infosys, CADD Technologies and so on. Some of the students are pursuing their higher studies in IITs and foreign universities.
The Department of Aeronautical Engineering has well established laboratories. Cessna – A four seater propeller engine serviceable aircraft is available for the study purpose. Aerodynamics lab, Aircraft structures lab, Aircraft structures repair lab, Aero engine repair and maintenance lab, Propulsion lab, Thermodynamics lab, Strength of materials lab, Fluid mechanics lab, CADD lab are some of its laboratories with major equipment like Computerized Low Speed Wind Tunnel, Cascade tunnel, Blower balance, water flow channel, Aero engine CJ-610, Turbojet engine, TIG,MIG and Spot welding machines, Plasma cutting machine, Universal Testing Machine, Twin cylinder four stroke diesel engine, Air conditioner Trainer duct, Impact tester, Hardness tester, Torsion Testing machine, Spring testing machine, Binocular metallurgical microscope & standard metallurgical microstructure.
